Location Scouting

Location scouting for our music video

Olivia and I wanted our music video to take place at a dinner party, where our central couple will be hosting their guests. This will be where the tension is in the video, which will be displayed through the communication between the man and woman in the relationship. When Olivia and I discussed possible filming locations, we took our own dining rooms into consideration and evaluated them in terms of what we wanted. We wanted a dinner party of 6 people (including the couple), as well as a room that could provide dark but warm lighting we could use.

My dining room

Firstly, Olivia and I looked at my dining room. In terms of lighting, the room is often quite dark, even in the middle of the day, so it would be convenient if we found we could not film at night time. The decor of the room also works in our favour for a music video that would focus on a group of people having formal drinks together. The room consists of various drinks cabinets and trolleys, with a shelf of glasses behind the table, and this would convey the sense of formality of the dinner party to the viewer.
However, something that was a potential problem with this location was that the room is quite narrow, with there not being much space for the camera or crane if we used it. Also, the hallway from the kitchen to the dining room is small and it would be potentially difficult for Olivia and I to film the shot with Lucy walking back to sit at the table - especially if it meant having to walk around the back of the table, which could look awkward.

My kitchen

In terms of this filming location, the kitchen has fewer problems concerning space, and would be easy to film in. The sink is central to the room, which would be where Lucy's character would wash dishes, so the fight scene between the two characters could easily be done anywhere in this location. However, the main problem with this location is the aforementioned narrow hallway leading to the dining room, which may be a problem when filming.

Olivia's dining room

This filming location proved to be a better option to shoot the dinner party in due to the difference in space and lighting. In terms of space, Olivia's dining room has more space around the chairs of the table, which would make it easier to film around and easier for Lucy to walk around in the video. There is wider spacing between each chair at the table and a bigger separation between the row of chairs and the chair at the end of the table. This is good as it means there would be a more noticeable separation between Lucy and Vedaant's' characters in the video. Also, the lighting is better in this location. Although the room itself is brighter, something we may have to consider if we are unable to shoot at night, Olivia's dining room has lamps which can change colour through the use of an app. This means we have complete control over how the room could look, something useful as it means we can experiment with different moods and colours.

Olivia also had a set of table and chairs outside her house, which we could use as our filming location.

Conclusion

After considering the two possible locations, Olivia and I have decided to shoot our music video in her dining room and kitchen. This was because there is more spacing around the table and chairs, as well as through the hallway to the kitchen. Also, although the lighting in my dining room is darker, Olivia's dining room has coloured lamps, which will give us more options for our how want our scene to look. We can also experiment with different coloured lighting for different moments in the music video or to display different emotions.
