The kitchen scene

The next scene Olivia and I filmed this weekend was a fight scene, set in a kitchen. We hadn't been able to film at night time since our actors weren't available then. So instead, we used blankets which we hung up on the windows to black out the light and make the scene appear to be taking place in the evening. This proved mostly effective as it made the kitchen a lot darker but not so dark the exposure was too low.

We filmed the kitchen scene on a handheld camera, with the shot beginning at the sink with Lucy washing dishes, and panning back and forth between her and Vedaant as they argued together. We did this to match the intimacy and instability in their relationship. This took a few tries to get right as we also had to be mindful to keep the blankets out of the shot, but overall it was successful.

We also used an aperture light to project some cold, high-key lighting onto the scene, mimicking the light of a kitchen or fridge. This was also a challenge as we filmed the scene, as it meant we had to keep our shadows out of the frame, but we managed to film the whole of the scene without this being too much of a problem.

Starting the dinner scene

Since our actors were underage, when we were getting the food ready for the dinner scene, we used Ribena instead of red wine. This is something we will also be considering when we finish the dinner scene at the next shoot, as the majority of our extras will be 15/16/17.

Like with the kitchen scene, Olivia and I also had to black out the windows of the dining room for the dinner scene. This was a lot easier to do as Olivia's dining room already had curtains, and by this point in the day, it was beginning to rain so it was already dark outside. This scene was easier to film than the others, overall. We used a hand-held camera again to film the conversation between Lucy and Vedaant and also filmed some over-the-shoulder shots of him pushing her hand away, which was the focus of the shot. Overall the scene didn't take very long to film and was successful as it provided a lot of footage we can use between scenes in the final edit.

The bathroom scene

This was the most difficult scene to film. Like in the other locations, Olivia and I blacked out the window with a blanket, with us using a red blanket for this scene as it blended with the red coloured lighting we used with the aperture.
